Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission
Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission is a registered Charitable trust working with a not for profit motive. The trust aims to serve the backward sections of the population of Attappady block of Palakkad district in Kerala state, India. Overall development of the people of Attappady, especially the scheduled tribes, with freedom from illness, poverty and malnourishment has been the focus of the mission ever since its establishment.
Some of the intiaties under community health projects include village health workers, mental health, alcohol de-addiction, adolescent girls’ health and sickle cell disease. Some of their other projects that need mention include education and skill development, livelihood, medicinal plants cultivation, drinking water, sanitary conveniences and irrigation.
Swami Vivekananda Medical Mission is a charitable trust which was registered in 2004.The trustees are citizens of the area who have come together for a noble cause. Some eminent citizens from Palakkad district and outside have also later joined as members to further the cause. V.P.S.Menon is the President of the trust.
Ankitara Foundation has donated especially to the sickle cell anaemia project of the organisation. Sickle Cell Anaemia is a disease caused by a defective haemoglobin molecule in the Red blood cell (RBC). It is a congenital disease transmitted to the child if both parents carry the gene for the disease. The affected persons have defective growth, repeated attacks of severe anaemia, and repeated attacks of severe pain, infections and possibility of early death.
