Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School, a free school serving poor children in and around Kasuva village in Thiruvallur district in Tamil Nadu, India, is one such school that is struggling to keep the children in school due to the economic background the children's families are from.  Before 1988, most of the children in these villages worked as child laborers. Since the school was established in 1988, it has gradually transformed these villages.

The children are provided with quality education completely free of cost. Even their textbooks, notebooks and uniforms are provided for. Transport to and from the school is also free for primary school children, while they are awaiting assistance from the government for the older children. Value-based education enables the children to become self-reliant and live ethical lives in the rural area in which we are located.

The school has consistently reported close to 100% results in Std. X and Std. XII board exams.

Sevalaya has been serving the rural underprivileged communities since 1988. V Muralidharan is the founder & managing trustee. Today, Sevalaya, a charitable trust operates in 16 centres in Tamil Nadu (10 districts) and Puducherry.

The organisation is professionally managed and is governed by a Board of Trustees with a deep commitment to social development, drawn from varied backgrounds. An advisory committee, consisting of experienced people shares their expertise and skills for the better governance of Sevalaya.

Ankitara Foundation is supporting Mahakavi Bharathiyar Higher Secondary School through Sevalaya and has adopted 31 children from this school.
