Agaram Foundation

India is on the cusp of change. The country is marching into the 21st century, rightly proud of all its advancements in science and technology, its spectacular improvements in infrastructure and IT. And yet, we're weighed down by devastating inequalities, by a huge population that remains untouched by well- meaning acts like the Right to Education, and a large gender inequality. At Agaram, they want to make a difference in the lives of the millions who are not yet touched by education.

The foundation realized that hand holding the students through their often traumatic initiations into higher education was essential for ensuring that they completed their studies and following up on this has roped in volunteers from the IT sector to mentor these first generation learners. Currently, the government supports students only up to higher secondary level in the govt-run schools. They are unable to continue higher education without the support of organisations like Agaram.

Mr. Gnanavel, a journalist-activist, had been successfully conducting an intervention programme for first generation learners in Dharmapuri district, one of the most backward areas in Tamilnadu. He had realized that hand holding the students through their often traumatic initiations into higher education was essential for ensuring that they completed their studies,. He has roped in volunteers from the IT sector to act as mentors for these first generation learners. Impressed by the success of this model, Actor and philanthropist, Mr. R S Surya, joined hands with Gnanavel, and on September 25th, 2006, the seeds of Agaram Foundation were sown in Chennai, India. Under the stewardship of the organisation’s founder and trustees, the vision for Agaram took shape.

Ankitara Foundation has donated to Agaram.
